Amsterdam Coffee Scene

Here are couple of postcards from Amsterdam and its coffee scene. In this particular I attached pictures from 5 cafés I liked the most with some short recommendation and impressions: Scandinavian Embassy, White Label Coffee, LOT61, Coffee Company (Oosterdok) and Quartier Putain.
In the next post I’ll give some hints and tips while visiting Amsterdam’s
caffeinated and cultural scene. Stay tuned!

Scandinavian Embassy

Scandinavian Embassy
Scandinavian Embassy is a place for a delicious breakfast – try their famous kanelsnegle, which I have already wrote about here. And granolas with goat’s cheese. That was my approach to go out of my taste comfort zone. It failed. How can people eat diary products that literally taste like a goat?! I’ll try again when I grow up.  Small coffee place located right next to the Saphrati Park and a walking distance from RIALTO cinema in De Pijp district. You can definitely feel the Scandinavian vibe out there, as most of the place was filled with platinum blonde heads with Fjällräven rucksacks. A place where old school in form of La Marzocco machine meets new school in form of DROP Coffee and Coffee Collective beans.
Scandinavian Embassy

Perfect match.

White Label Coffee

Keep it simple.
White Label Coffee is hidden between some multi brand 24/7 grocery shops, near De Hallen. Definitely a place to taste a brownie at and feel odd if not working on some project on your Mac. But! I like the vibe, you could sit everywhere – floor included. The team’s so chilled as if they’ve been high all day long. You A’dam, you… You can also steal some of the stickers with café’s logo or the ones saying: White Label Baby! My Polish part of soul likes that kind of free shit. I am also fond of the interior – white walls, wooden tables all around, freshest fashion and art magazines from all over the world.

LOT61 Coffee Roasters

Sit and follow the roast.
LOT 61 is located near the canals, so it is a good idea to have a sit outside and just indulge your beverage, while looking at the city or while counting cycling Duchies. You’ll also find a small roastery inside, where you can follow the whole roasting process, when the weather has some issues. Look at those blue cups… aren’t they just lovely?! Spirit espresso machine paired with barista’s skilled (and pretty!) hands do the job. Plus Christopher George Latore Wallaceon the wall. If I should die before I wake, that’s the life I wish.
I like your Spirit.
Where the people at?

Coffee Company Oosterdok

Coffee Company Oosterdok
I visited CC just for a quick breakfast. Apple pie was average – standard needs to be kept, as Coffee Company is a Dutch answer to Starbucks, just in local edition. I like the approach. CC at Oosterdok is a classical chain coffee shop, where business people grab their drinks in a hurry and the sitting guests there their coffee with monitors. But! I can’t complain about the general atmosphere inside. It’s bright and cosy. Not much to choose from according to food – just some cookies, croissant and two kind of cake. But the view outside is a great makes up for it all. So sit outside, if you can and enjoy the view of Damrak, canals and funny boats anchored along the dock.
The art of procaffeintation.
Work, work, work…
….or not.

Quartier Putain

Quartier Putain
Now this particular café is my favorite so far. Old school hip hop from the jukebox, rich bodied, almost chocolate espresso, sex workers around the corner, and a pastor smoking pot right in front of you. Not enough? Then take a 3 minute walk and sit by one of the bridges in the Red Light District and smell the tulips. The team will high five you at the entrance and the ask you to take a sit, while they’ll please your guts with music and that freshly grinded goodness. Me dig it!
cheers, bi***es!

De Koffieschenkerij

Another place in the Red Light District. Espresso doppio macchiato was tasty, though bit too acidy for me. Café is located by the canal, hidden in a croner of a church next to Quartier Putain. It gives more privacy. It’s pretty dark inside and there is not much space at the entrance and by the bar, but it’s still a nice place for outside chilling in the summer. The floors are awesome! Checkmate!

BOCCA coffee roasters

I ordered a black shot there as I wanted to feel the full taste of Dutch coffee master’s. I wasn’t disappointed for sure, but no butterflies in stomach either. High ceiling, wooden menu on the wall and blue cutlery made up for the coffee taste though. BOCCA is located close to the Leidseplein and Flower Market, so it’s a good idea to just have a take-away and wander through the district. Pretty big selection of cakes. They taste as delicious as they look like (at least their cheesecake does!).

Sweet Cup Roastery

A little sweet pit-stop in the city center. Dogs (and kids) are welcome. Pastel interior makes you wanna chill a bit longer, than planned. Friendly (and handsome) team, or rather one barista. Oh so edible. I meant the croissant I ordered.

KOKO coffee & design

Two girls passionate about fashion and coffee opened a little boutique in the heart of The Red light District. Scandi design, such as pieces from HAN KJØBENHAVN, Henry VIbskov, etc. In the company of good coffee and posters, postcards of local artists. I got so into the vibe, that I decided to buy a postcard (it’s not the size that matters, right?!)  and a tote bag (#studentmoneyproblems). As I forgot it was a FANCY boutique and that even a f%$@#g postcard may cost 20€ (What on eARTh?!?!), I almost spitted the coffee in the poor girls face, when she said the price out loud. At least I drank a tasty beverage and now have a pink pineapple hanging on the wall, reminding me about my spotaneous decision.

Cheers!
